Liberal Democrats in Aberdeen have welcomed Cabinet Secretary for Finance Kate Forbes’s decision to activate the Bellwin Scheme to provide additional funds to councils to meet the extra costs of dealing with the exceptional weather on 12th August.
Ms Forbes’s move came after the Aberdeen’s Liberal Democrat councillors called on her to activate the Bellwin Scheme earlier today (12th August).
Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Aberdeen City Council Ian Yuill said, “The flash floods have caused damage to schools, roads and other council infrastructure in Aberdeen. That means the council will have to spend money to make good the flood damage. The Bellwin Scheme is designed for just this type of situation.
“I contacted Kate Forbes earlier today and urged her to activate the Bellwin Scheme so that Aberdeen City Council could receive additional money to meet the extra costs of dealing with the impact of the flooding. It is only right that she has now done so.”
Councillor Yuill concluded, “I have now contacted the council’s Chief Executive to urge her to seek Bellwin funding to meet the extra costs of dealing with the severe weather and flash floods.”
